A Korean gift set (선물세트, seonmul seteu) is a boxed, ready-to-give bundle sold mainly for Chuseok, Seollal (Lunar New Year) and the year-end holidays. The most popular ones in Korea are food sets like canned ham, cooking oil and red ginseng, but those face strict import rules abroad. Skincare and tea sets usually travel much better, and beauty brands' year-end holiday sets are another easy choice.
This guide explains what Korean gift sets are, which types are popular, which ones are realistic to ship abroad, what the food import rules say in the US, UK and Australia, and how to order a set from Korea.

What is a Korean gift set?
Gift sets are a big part of Korean holiday culture. Before Chuseok and Seollal, supermarkets, department stores and online malls fill up with boxed sets meant for family, coworkers and business contacts. Companies give them to employees, and people bring them when visiting relatives.
The format is simple: several items of one product line packed in a sturdy box, often with a handle or a fabric wrap. The packaging is part of the gift. Some brands use a 보자기 (bojagi), a traditional Korean wrapping cloth.
Three features make Korean gift sets different from a regular bundle:
- Seasonal timing. Most sets appear a few weeks before a holiday and disappear afterward.
- Early-bird pricing. Brands run pre-order or early-bird discounts before the holiday week.
- Price tiers. Sets come in tiers, from small, inexpensive sets to premium boxes.
Which Korean gift sets are most popular?
Food sets dominate in Korea. Price comparison site Enuri analyzed sales from August 31 to September 6, 2026, the run-up to Chuseok, according to Venture Square:
| Category | Change vs. the week before |
|---|---|
| Canned food (including canned ham sets) | +278% |
| Red ginseng | +83% |
| Oils (sesame, perilla) | +56% |
| All food categories | +25% |
Shoppers focused on gifts under ₩30,000, often comparing coupons and points. Top items in that week included Cheong Kwan Jang's red ginseng stick packs (about ₩20,000 at the lowest price that week), sesame and perilla oil two-packs, and canned ham gift sets.
These are the classic Korean holiday gifts. They are also the hardest ones to send abroad, as explained below.
Other common categories:
- Skincare and cosmetics sets. Brand bestsellers in holiday packaging, often with extra minis.
- Tea sets. Assorted teas in a gift box, from brands like Osulloc.
- Fruit, beef and fish. Fresh premium sets, sold for domestic delivery only.
- Household sets. Shampoo, soap and toothpaste bundles.
- Snack and coffee sets. Assorted packaged snacks and drip coffee.
Which Korean gift sets ship well abroad?
| Set type | Ships well? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Skincare sets (creams, serums, toners) | Usually | Check for aerosols and alcohol-based perfume |
| Tea sets (dried leaf, tea bags) | Usually | Plant products; check your country's rules |
| Stationery and character gift boxes | Yes | Light and sturdy |
| Snack and coffee sets | Depends | Food rules apply; check meat-based flavorings |
| Red ginseng sets | Depends | Often sold as health functional food; rules vary |
| Canned ham and meat sets | Rarely | Meat import restrictions in many countries |
| Cooking oil sets | Rarely | Heavy, liquid, food rules apply |
| Fresh fruit, beef, fish | No | Perishable, domestic delivery only |
The rule of thumb: the more a set looks like groceries, the harder it is to send. Skincare and tea are the easy wins.
Skincare and beauty gift sets
Korean beauty brands release holiday and gift editions every year. Two recent examples:
- Sulwhasoo 2025 Holiday Collection. Announced on November 17, 2025, with the theme "A Holiday of Unexpected Delight" and packaging inspired by winter plum blossoms. It included a limited 진설크림 리치 설화 에디션 (Jinseol Cream Rich Seolhwa Edition) and a gift set pairing 자음생크림 (Jaeumsaeng Cream) with 윤조에센스 (Yunjo Essence), sold at department store counters and on Korean e-commerce sites, according to Amorepacific.
- Olive Young character sets. Olive Young runs collaborations where regular products come in character packaging. Its May 2026 Pokémon collaboration covered about 230 products from 61 brands, according to CJ's newsroom. These make easy gifts for fans.
Korean stores also sell 기획세트 (gihoek seteu, "planned set"): a regular product packed with extra minis or a refill at a set price. They are not always holiday items, but they work as gifts and are often better value than buying the pieces one by one.

Tea gift sets
Tea sets are among the easiest Korean gifts to ship: light, dry and long-lasting. For Chuseok 2026, Osulloc announced three tiers, according to Amorepacific:
- Tea Edition Heritage (티 에디션 헤리티지): The premium set, with master's tea, sejak green tea, herbal tea and blended tea.
- Tea Edition Special (티 에디션 스페셜): Pure, herbal and blended teas.
- Budget sets: Smaller sets for everyday gifting.
Osulloc also offered its "bojagi of the year" wrapping in white, brown and pink. The sets were sold on Osulloc's online mall, at its tea houses and department store tea shops, and at the Jeju Tea Museum. Osulloc ran an early-bird promotion from September 7 to 16 and a Chuseok promotion from September 17 to 30, 2026.

How do you choose a set for someone abroad?
A few practical questions narrow it down:
- Will they use it? Skincare sets suit people who already use Korean beauty. For anyone else, tea or stationery is a safer pick.
- Does it need Korean to use? Most cosmetics labels are in Korean. Pick products whose use is obvious, like a cream or a cleansing oil, or include a short note.
- Skin type and allergies. Check the ingredient list for fragrance or ingredients the person avoids.
- Size and weight. A compact set costs less to ship than a large presentation box with the same products.
- Timing. If the gift is for a date, work backward from it and leave room for the item to reach our warehouse, be photographed and travel abroad.
Can you send Korean food gift sets abroad?
Sometimes, but every country has its own rules, and meat is the biggest problem. Here is what official sources say for three common destinations. Rules change, so treat this as a starting point. Ask us before you order any food set.
United States
- FDA prior notice. Imported food generally needs prior notice filed with the FDA. The FDA's gift policy says the agency typically does not act when food is shipped by one individual to another for non-commercial purposes. But if a store ships the food, the store is the shipper, and the FDA says it generally would take action if no prior notice is filed. Food bought from a business and shipped by a business is commercial in this sense.
- Pork products. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service added South Korea to its list of regions affected with African swine fever on September 17, 2019. As a result, pork and pork products from Korea are subject to APHIS import restrictions. Canned ham sets fall into this category.
- Duty. CBP ended duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value shipments from all countries on August 29, 2025, so gift orders can be charged duty. See our US import duty guide.
United Kingdom
GOV.UK's rules for personal imports into Great Britain from non-EU countries such as South Korea say:
- Meat and meat products: Not allowed.
- Milk and dairy products: Not allowed, except up to 2 kg of powdered infant milk, infant food or special food needed for medical reasons, in branded, unopened packaging.
- Honey: Up to 2 kg per person.
- Fish: Up to 20 kg per person, gutted if fresh, or dried, cooked, cured or smoked.
Australia
Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) says:
- Screening: Biosecurity officers, detector dogs and X-ray check international mail for food, plant material and animal products, including meat.
- Non-compliant goods: Items that do not meet import conditions are destroyed or sent back to the overseas sender.
- Canned meat: Canned meat products that do not meet DAFF's conditions are destroyed, and conditions for meat can change quickly with disease outbreaks.
- Descriptions: Words like "gift" or "present" are not acceptable as a description of contents.
- Checking a product: DAFF's BICON system lists import conditions for specific items.
European Union
The European Commission's personal imports guidance says personal consignments of meat, milk and their products from outside the EU, including packages sent by post to private people, are generally prohibited. The exceptions are narrow: powdered infant milk, infant food and special medical foods under 2 kg in branded packaging. Honey and other animal products are allowed up to 2 kg per person. Undeclared meat or dairy can be confiscated and destroyed.
What this means for Korean food sets

How do you read a Korean gift set listing?
Before ordering, check these labels on the Korean product page. A browser translator handles most of them, but many pages put details inside images.
| Korean label | Meaning | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 구성 (guseong) | Contents | Lists every item in the box |
| 용량 (yongnyang) | Volume or weight | Helps estimate shipping weight |
| 원재료명 (wonjaeryomyeong) | Ingredients | Shows meat, dairy or egg in food sets |
| 식품유형 (sikpum yuhyeong) | Food type | Says whether it is a general food or a health functional food |
| 유통기한 / 소비기한 (yutong gihan / sobi gihan) | Sell-by / use-by date | Matters for food sent abroad |
| 쇼핑백 포함 (syoping baek poham) | Shopping bag included | Gift bags add size to the box |
If the ingredient list for a snack, tea or seasoning set mentions pork (돼지고기, dwaejigogi), beef (소고기, sogogi) or milk (우유, uyu), mention it when you ask us.
When should you order Korean gift sets?
Gift sets follow the Korean holiday calendar:
| Season | When sets appear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chuseok | Several weeks before the holiday (early-bird sales from early September in 2026) | Food and tea dominate |
| Christmas and year-end | November and December | Beauty holiday collections; Sulwhasoo's 2025 collection was announced November 17 |
| Seollal (Lunar New Year) | Several weeks before the holiday, which falls in February in 2027 | Food, tea, beauty |
For an overseas gift, order early. A set has to reach our warehouse, be photographed and then travel abroad, and holiday seasons are busy for Korean couriers. For Christmas gift ideas, see our Christmas gifts from Korea guide.
What can go wrong with gift set orders?
Hidden restricted items. A beauty gift set may include a mini perfume, a hair spray or a mist in aerosol form. These have air shipping limits. See what you cannot ship from Korea.
Food you did not expect. Some "lifestyle" sets include snacks or tea with additives. Read the contents list.
Heavy boxes. Sturdy gift boxes add weight and size. Shipping cost depends on the box, not just the products.
Sold out after the holiday. Seasonal sets disappear once the holiday passes. If you want one, order before the season ends.
Damaged packaging. Gift boxes can be crushed in transit. Our photos show the condition when the set leaves Korea.
FAQ
What is 선물세트?
선물세트 (seonmul seteu) means "gift set." In Korea it usually refers to boxed holiday sets sold before Chuseok and Seollal, from canned ham and cooking oil to skincare and tea.
Can I send a Korean Spam gift set to the US?
Canned ham is a pork product, and USDA's APHIS lists South Korea as a region affected with African swine fever, so pork products from Korea face import restrictions. Ask us before you order any meat-based set.
Which Korean gift sets are easiest to ship abroad?
Skincare sets without aerosols or perfume, dry tea sets, stationery and character goods. They are light, do not spoil, and face fewer import rules than food.
Are Korean red ginseng sets allowed abroad?
It depends on the country and the product form. Red ginseng is often sold as a health functional food or supplement, which some countries regulate separately. Ask us before you order.
When do Korean holiday gift sets go on sale?
Usually a few weeks before Chuseok or Seollal, often with early-bird discounts. Osulloc's Chuseok 2026 early-bird promotion ran September 7 to 16, ahead of a September 17 to 30 promotion.
Does a gift set count as a gift for customs?
Not automatically. Gift allowances in customs rules are usually written for gifts sent between individuals, and each country sets its own rules. Expect a store-bought set to be treated as a purchase, with the recipient paying any duty, tax and carrier clearance fee.
Can you add a message or gift wrapping?
Korean brands sometimes offer their own gift wrapping, like Osulloc's bojagi. Choose it on the product page if available, and tell us the option name when you send the link.
Ready to send a gift set?
Pick a skincare, tea or stationery set, check the contents list, and send us the Korean link. For anything with food inside, ask us before you order, and we will check it against your country's rules.
