Korean Sunscreen Not Sold in the US: Why, and What to Know (2026)

By HaulKorea · Last checked 2026-10-15

Many Korean sunscreens are not sold in the US because sunscreen is an over-the-counter drug there, and US products may only use UV filters on the FDA's approved list. Popular Korean formulas rely on newer filters that are not on that list, so brands either sell a reformulated US version or do not sell that product in the US at all.

This guide explains the FDA rules (including the 2026 change), which sunscreens Koreans actually buy, what they cost in won, and what to know before ordering one from Korea.

Quick facts
US legal status Sunscreen is an OTC drug, regulated by the FDA
Filters the FDA treats as GRASE Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (2021 proposed order)
New in 2026 Bemotrizinol added to the US sunscreen monograph, up to 6% (final order June 10, 2026)
Status in Korea Sunscreens are reviewed as 기능성화장품 (gineungseong hwajangpum, functional cosmetics)
Typical Olive Young price ₩25,000 to ₩35,000 list for a 50 ml tube or set, often discounted (as of October 2026)
Common Korean filters not on the US list Ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol, drometrizole trisiloxane
Korean brands with US versions Round Lab, SKIN1004, d'Alba and others sell OTC-labeled versions on Olive Young's US site

Why are many Korean sunscreens not sold in the US?

In the US, a sunscreen is not a cosmetic. It is an over-the-counter drug. The FDA says a product's classification depends on its intended use, and that moisturizers and makeup marketed with sun-protection claims are both cosmetics and drugs.

That has one big practical effect. A sunscreen sold in the US can only use active ingredients covered by the FDA's sunscreen monograph (M020), or one approved through a separate drug application. The list has barely changed in decades.

Korea works differently. Korean sunscreens are cosmetics that pass a functional-cosmetic review by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. On Olive Young's Korean product pages, sunscreens state that they have completed the 기능성 화장품 (functional cosmetics) review. Korean formulators can use a wider set of modern UV filters, and many of the best-selling Korean sunscreens do.

So a brand that wants to sell its Korean bestseller in the US has two choices. It can reformulate with US-allowed filters and go through US drug labeling, or it can skip the US market for that product.

What does the FDA actually allow?

The FDA's sunscreen Q&A, updated in 2026, sets out where things stand:

  • Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The FDA's 2021 proposed order proposed these as generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE). The FDA says it found sufficient safety data for them at concentrations up to 25%.
  • Twelve chemical filters need more data. The FDA lists cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, oxybenzone and avobenzone as needing additional data to show they are GRASE. These are still the filters in most US chemical sunscreens while that process continues.
  • Two filters removed. A September 10, 2026 final order removed PABA and trolamine salicylate from the monograph. The FDA says it is not aware of any US sunscreen currently containing them.
  • One filter added. Bemotrizinol, covered below.

What changed in 2026: bemotrizinol

On June 9, 2026, the FDA announced it had added bemotrizinol as a permitted sunscreen active ingredient. The FDA called it the first new active ingredient added to the OTC sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s, and said the filter has been used in Europe and many other countries for years.

The final order, OTC000039, allows bemotrizinol at up to 6%. The order states it takes effect on August 9, 2026, unless disputed. The request came from DSM Nutritional Products, and the order carries an 18-month exclusivity period for that requestor.

What this means for shoppers: it is a first step, not a fix. Bemotrizinol is one filter. Korean sunscreens usually combine several, and most of the others are still not on the US list. Products also need US-specific testing and labeling. Do not expect your favorite Korean tube to appear on US shelves soon just because of this order.

Which UV filters do Korean sunscreens use?

We read the full ingredient lists on Olive Young Korea's product pages for several top sellers on October 15, 2026. Here is what the UV filters look like.

Sunscreen (Olive Young Korea) Notable UV filters on the Korean label All on the US list?
Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream, 50 ml Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol (bisoctrizole), diethylhexyl butamido triazone (iscotrizinol) No
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol No
Torriden Dive-in Moisture Sun Cream, 60 ml Ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, drometrizole trisiloxane, bisoctrizole No
d'Alba Pink Tone-up Sun Cream, 65 ml Titanium dioxide, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, iscotrizinol No
Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun Plus, 50 ml Zinc oxide Filter yes; product still needs US OTC compliance

The pattern is clear. Ethylhexyl triazone and diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate appear in four of the five. None of those newer filters are on the FDA's list. Mineral-only formulas like the Dr.G use a filter the US accepts, but a Korean-labeled tube is still not a US-labeled OTC drug.

How do the US versions differ?

Some Korean brands now make separate US formulas. Olive Young's US site lists, for example, a Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing "UVlock" whose Drug Facts show avobenzone 2.70%, homosalate 13.50% and octisalate 4.50%. Its SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum "UV" lists avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. A d'Alba sun cushion on the same site is labeled "(otc)" and lists zinc oxide, homosalate, octocrylene and ethylhexyl salicylate (octisalate).

Same brand name, different product. The Korean Round Lab tube relies on four modern filters; the US version uses three classic US ones. Texture, white cast and feel can differ, which is why fans still look for the Korean version.

If what you want is the US version, buy it in the US. Olive Young's US store and other US retailers sell those products, with no import questions. The rest of this guide is about the Korean versions.

Which sunscreens are popular in Korea right now?

Olive Young, the Korean health and beauty chain, publishes a sun care sales ranking that makes a good snapshot. On October 15, 2026, the top of its sun care sales ranking included:

Rank Product (Olive Young Korea) List price Price shown on October 15
1 Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream 50 ml 1+1 set ₩25,000 ₩24,500
2 Mediheal Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum 50+50 g set ₩34,900 from ₩22,900
3 Goodal Heartleaf Calming Moisture Sun Cream 50+50 ml (Sanrio collab) ₩22,000 from ₩18,900
4 Numbuzin No.3 Tone-up Beige Sun Cream 50 ml double set ₩39,000 from ₩23,500
5 d'Alba Pink Tone-up Sun Cream 65 ml + 65 ml set ₩65,000 ₩41,900
6 Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun Plus 50 ml set (+20 ml) ₩29,000 from ₩19,900
10 Torriden Dive-in Moisture Sun Cream 60 ml 1+1 set ₩25,000 from ₩18,910
11 SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum set (50+50+15 ml) ₩35,000 ₩28,000

All prices are as of October 2026. Olive Young runs discounts, coupons and 1+1 sets constantly, so the price you see on a given day may differ. The ranking also mixes in tone-up creams, sun serums and even cushions with SPF.

A few things stand out:

  • Sets are normal. Many top items are 1+1 or 50 ml + 50 ml bundles. The single tube may be listed separately at a lower price.
  • Textures are the selling point. Korean labels push "sun serum," "watery," "no white cast" and "tone-up." Tone-up creams add a slight pink, purple or beige tint.
  • Mineral options exist. Products labeled 무기자차 (mugijacha, mineral/physical sunscreen) use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. 유기자차 (yugijacha) means chemical filters. 혼합자차 (honhapjacha) means a mix.

Can you buy Korean sunscreen from outside Korea?

First, check whether you really need the Korean version.

  • If you are in the US and want a brand rather than a specific formula, Olive Young's US site sells sunscreens for the US market from Round Lab, SKIN1004, d'Alba, Dr.G, Isntree and other Korean brands. On October 15, 2026, Olive Young US listed 127 sunscreens in its suncare category.
  • If you are outside the US, check whether Olive Young's global store or the brand's own global site ships to your country.

If you want the Korean formula specifically, or a Korea-only set or collaboration, you need to buy from a Korean store. Olive Young Korea's own site delivers domestically: standard delivery was ₩2,500, free from ₩20,000, when we checked.

Can you import Korean sunscreen into the US?

This is the part to read carefully. We will not promise that a Korean-labeled sunscreen can enter the US, because the rules do not give a simple yes.

The FDA's personal importation page says that, in most circumstances, it is illegal for individuals to import drugs into the US for personal use. It also says that if a drug is approved in another country but is an unapproved new drug in the US, it is illegal to import. At the same time, the page says FDA staff may consider a more permissive decision when a product is not for treatment of a serious condition and there is no known significant health risk.

In plain terms: FDA has discretion, and a Korean sunscreen with non-US filters is a drug product that is not approved in the US. Whether a given personal parcel is released is not something a seller or agent can guarantee. The FDA also lists reasons it would refuse a personal import, including shipments that appear to be for commercial distribution. Several identical tubes can look commercial.

For that reason, ask us before you order any sunscreen, SPF cushion, SPF tone-up cream or SPF makeup for a US address. We will tell you what we can do for that product and destination. Duties are a separate question from FDA admissibility. Since August 29, 2025, CBP has applied duties to low-value parcels from all countries, and the recipient pays any US duty, tax and carrier clearance fee locally; our total does not include them. Our US import duty guide covers the tariff side.

What about Canada, Australia and other countries?

Rules differ widely. A few examples from official sources:

Canada. Health Canada says sunscreens sold in Canada must have a Drug Identification Number (DIN) or a Natural Product Number (NPN). Sunscreens with chemical filters are drugs, mineral-only ones are natural health products, and combinations carry a DIN. Korean-labeled products will not carry either number.

Australia. The TGA regulates all primary sunscreens (products mainly for sun protection) as therapeutic goods that must be in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods before they are supplied. Many secondary sunscreens, such as moisturizers or makeup with SPF, are excluded and fall under cosmetics rules if they meet certain criteria.

Elsewhere. Many countries treat sunscreens as cosmetics, but some have their own registration or import limits. Check your country's guide, such as shipping from Korea to Australia, and ask us before ordering.

Can sunscreen be shipped by air from Korea?

Usually, if it is a cream, gel or lotion in a tube or bottle. Sprays are the exception.

Korea Post's EMS guidance says finished cosmetics can be sent, but aerosol-type pressurized containers cannot. It describes the problem container as a metal can with a concave base, while plastic and glass containers can go. It also excludes cosmetics whose container shows a flame symbol.

That means:

  • Sun creams, serums, gels, sticks and cushions: usually fine to send.
  • Sun sprays in metal aerosol cans: a problem for air mail and many couriers.
  • Sun mists with a flammable label: also a problem.

Couriers have their own lists too. See what you cannot ship from Korea for more.

How to order a Korean sunscreen through HaulKorea

  1. Pick the exact product. Send the Olive Young Korea link (or another Korean store link). Note the set or option you want, such as single tube or 1+1.
  2. Tell us your country. For the US and any country with drug rules for sunscreen, we check before quoting. Ask us before you order.
  3. Get one total. If we can ship it, you see product price, Korean delivery and international shipping in one figure. You pay once by PayPal. If the actual weight is lower, we refund the shipping difference.
  4. We buy and inspect. We send inspection photos from our Korean warehouse before anything ships, so you can check the box, seal and expiry.
  5. Combine if you like. Sunscreen often travels with other skincare. See how combining orders works.
  6. Receive and pay local charges. In every country, including the US, the recipient pays any import duty, VAT or sales tax and carrier clearance fee locally.

Tips for choosing a Korean sunscreen

  • Read the Korean filter type. 무기자차 (mineral), 유기자차 (chemical), 혼합자차 (hybrid).
  • Check SPF and PA. Korean labels show PA ratings (PA+ to PA++++) for UVA protection alongside SPF.
  • Check the volume. Sets bundle full sizes with minis. Compare per milliliter.
  • Mind the tint. "Tone-up" means a tinted or brightening cream, not a clear one.
  • Buy what you will use. Olive Young pages list a use-by period, such as 30 or 36 months from manufacture and 12 months after opening on the products we checked.

FAQ

Why can't I find Korean sunscreen in US stores?

In the US, sunscreen is an OTC drug, and products may only use active ingredients on the FDA's monograph list. Most popular Korean sunscreens use newer filters that are not on that list, so brands either reformulate for the US or do not sell that product there.

Did the FDA approve Korean sunscreen filters in 2026?

The FDA added one filter, bemotrizinol, up to 6%, through a final order issued June 10, 2026, effective August 9, 2026 unless disputed. Most other filters common in Korean sunscreens, such as ethylhexyl triazone and bisoctrizole, are still not on the US list.

Is the US version of a Korean sunscreen the same formula?

No. For example, the Round Lab Birch Juice sunscreen on Olive Young Korea uses four modern filters, while the US "UVlock" version lists avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate. The brand is the same, but the formula is different.

What is the best-selling sunscreen at Olive Young Korea?

On October 15, 2026, the Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream 1+1 set was first in Olive Young's sun care sales ranking, followed by Mediheal and Goodal sun products. Rankings change daily.

How much does Korean sunscreen cost in Korea?

As of October 2026, popular sunscreens on Olive Young Korea list at about ₩22,000 to ₩35,000 for a 50 to 60 ml product or small set, with discounts often bringing them under ₩25,000. Larger double sets cost more.

Can I bring Korean sunscreen into the US for personal use?

The FDA says importing unapproved drugs is generally illegal, though its staff may use discretion for low-risk products not for a serious condition. Release is not guaranteed. Ask us before ordering any SPF product for a US address.

Can sunscreen sprays be shipped from Korea?

Usually not by air. Korea Post's EMS guidance excludes aerosol-type pressurized metal containers and cosmetics marked with a flame symbol. Creams, gels, serums and sticks are the safer choice.

Is Korean sunscreen allowed in Canada and Australia?

Both countries regulate sunscreens beyond ordinary cosmetics. Canada requires a DIN or NPN on sunscreens sold there, and Australia treats primary sunscreens as therapeutic goods. Ask us before ordering for either country.
